Research Interests: The history of reading and writing Chinese in Japan; manuscript, woodblock printing, and other technologies of the book; commentary and translation
Brian Steininger is Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies. He has studied at Macalester College, the University of Tokyo, and Yale University, and taught at Bates College before coming to Princeton. He specializes in the reception of Chinese literature in Japan, and is currently writing a book about Zen monks and media technology in the thirteenth century.
