Hi, I'm Lauren, a third year PhD student in Philosophy and a member of the Classical Philosophy (CPhil) Program. I did my BA at Colgate University, and then went on to do an MA in Philosophy at Tufts and an MSt in Ancient Philosophy at Oxford.
I work on Ancient Greek philosophy, specifically Plato and Aristotle's ethics and moral psychology. I am especially interested in questions surrounding the way that Plato took education to shape the soul and instill virtue in the Republic. Besides ancient Greek philosophy, I also like to read about topics in contemporary ethics and philosophy of religion.
I've moved a lot between the tri-state area and New England, so I'd say my hometown is in the Northeastern US. Outside of academics, I like to bake and am probably approaching expert status when it comes to vegan and allergy friendly baking. I also like to run (slowly) and, although my skills in both areas are far from expert-status, I love bird watching and speaking and reading French. I am always super happy to talk about these topics and about nature, fitness, language-learning, food, etc. more generally.
When I'm working, I like to change my surroundings every once in a while, so my favorite place tends to rotate and change from semester to semester. I spend a lot of time in 1879 Hall (the philosophy department), but I also like to work on the 6th floor of Firestone (i.e. at the top of the tower), and occasionally at Small World if I'm wanting some activity around me. If it's nice outside, you'll probably find me sitting on the sculpture outside of Firestone.
College is a great time to explore new topics, so even if you come in already having an idea about what you want to major in, make sure you stay open to discovering new things. Also, don't hesitate to reach out! I love all things having to do with organization, so I’m happy to help you make a schedule to best balance your work and free time, as well as discuss study strategies. I also have had several experiences being new at a university and I know how scary it can be, so I’m here if you need someone to talk to!
